How did you know him?

I grew up with Joe in Queens Village, New York.
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Joe and I lived on the same street, and played together every day after school. Playing in or around the Scolnick house as a child, felt about as safe and comfortable as life can get. When we were in the 9 to 12 year old range, Joe was the fairest person I had ever met. He just didn't have it in him to ever take unfair advantage of another person.
But you couldn't let his fairness mislead you when you played against him in sports. He was the ultimate competitor. He and I played one-on-one basketball in his backyard probably thousands of games (HORSE and 21). If I didn't bring my very best game, he would beat me every time. I was at least a full year older (although no bigger than Joe) and was expected to be able to beat a younger player. And my memory is that he won way more than half the time. He always came with his best game, and a dead pan expression much like a Larry Bird kinda player. I'm thankful we never played tennis together. That came a little later in his life.
My memories of Joe are of a super sweet guy and a great friend. Of course I don't know it to be true, but I feel as though Joe never said a bad word about me behind my back; and I was just as rotten at times as kids get at that age. But it was Joe that made feel that way, not anything I did.

How did you know him?

I grew-up with Joe in Queens NY.
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Joe and I were boyhood buddies. We lived on the same street and played together each day after school. We also spent years in the Boy Scouts together. When I was in my 10 to 13 year range, I knew of no one that was as fair to others as Joe was. He just didn't have it in him to take unfair advantage of anyone else. And he had little love for anyone that did take advantage of others. But you had to be careful of Joe's make-up, and you could not take him for a push-over because he was so fair. He had a competitive streak in him that was much stronger than must of us. Joe and I played hours of one-on-one basketball in his backyard. I was at least one full year older than Joe (but no bigger), and you might expect I could beat him in basketball. Not so. He won more than half of our games. If I didn't come to play my best game every day, he would beat me easily. And the reason was that he always came to play his best, and never merely fooled around. I'm lucky I never was on the other side of a tennis net from Joe. He was one special and sweet person, whom I only have the best memories of.

Professor during my college career
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I was blessed to be a part of Dr. Scolnick's classes during my time at UVA Wise. I majored in Political Science with the intention of pursuing an elementary education licensure. Dr. Scolnick found humor in everything. He commented often that Kindergarten teachers should not major in government. I will remember Dr. Scolnick as an influential person in my educational experience. His love for learning and his passion for sharing his knowledge has inspired me in my current career.

When the university was still Clinch Valley, I had Mr. Scolnick for political science. I was majoring in Criminal Justice for a Bachelors Degree. Although, I did not finish due to pregnancy, I enjoyed my experience.
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
While attending the college, Mr. Scolnick was very insightful with his lectures and did whatever he could to help anyone. I know that he helped me alot when I attended. Even after leaving the university not completing, I watched his broadcasts on TV. He will surely be missed. I would like to send my condolences to his family. UVA has lost one of their best professors.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Reece

Through campus interaction
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
To me, the most fascinating thing was that Joe, for all the wealth of knowledge he had and the seriousness of his work, loved comic books. He had the greatest collection of comic books. The man seemed to have a genuine interest in the capricious aspect of life. I think this was often overlooked with his booming voice and quick wit.

I remember Professor Scolnick well as a student in his American government class 15 years ago. He was always engaging and very affable. I know his absence will be felt dearly by all who remember him. His booming voice remains unforgettable. The halls of Clinch Valley are swept over by the sounds of silence.

Thank You Dr. Scolnick...

From around campus, and we were students in the same yoga class.
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I never had the pleasure of taking a class with Dr. Scolnick, but I knew him when I was around campus and working as a cadet with Campus Police when I was a student there. He was always delightful to talk to and you could never miss his presence in a room. A few years after graduation I took a yoga class for a little while in Norton where Joe was also a student. I learned a lot about myself and my body in that class, but I also learned about the joy of life, and accepting your boundaries with grace and humor. I learned those things from Joe, and I will never forget those months at the Yoga Studio. He was always so energetic and lively, and really brought something to that class that no one else could have brought. I can only imagine what he brought to a class he was teaching. He struck me as someone who was always a curious student as well as a masterful teacher.

Dr Scolnick left an amazing legacy at UVa-Wise as well as with anyone that had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. I am grateful I had the chance to. Namaste.

My deepest sympathy to his family. My prayers go out to them. UVA Wise has truly lost one of its greatest legends.

Only passing in the hall on my way to class, he would always speak and give a nice smile. Death is passing into the spiritual rim, and if we could see the other side we might not fear so much. I can not see the other side but I know that God is there and it must be beautiful.

Political Science Graduate 2002
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
the first day of any of his many classes, was absolutely the best part of each semester. several years ago a former chancellor encouraged the faculty to spend day one talking about life, and fostering a discussion that would inspire and set the tone for the entire semester. he kept doing so year after year - where he ended each one with the famous OTB (Outlast the Bastards. and he did. we will all miss him.

to his family and friends. i could speak volumes about what he has done for many of us, or i can simply say: look at where his students end up. attorney general, chief deputy attorney general, constitutional officers, executive legislative and amdinistrative officers, public officials, senior local, state, and federal governemnt staffers and advisors, numersous post-graduate degrees, and the list goes on, and on.

Memorial, Tribute,

Friend and colleague.
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Knew Joe for nearly 20 years, first as a Visiting Professor at Air War College, Montgomery AL, as active members and regular contributors to the International Studies Association (international and regional), as fellow conference panelists on many occasions, and as co-editors of a book on U.S. foreign policy. He led a life of distinguished service to his nation, his state, and his beloved host institution, the University of Virginia at Wise. As a classroom teacher, student advisor, professional colleague, and dear friend, he had no peer. He chose to teach and counsel the sons and daughters of
Appalachia, where he made his greatest mark. He invested his remarkable energy, high standards, and intellectual honesty as a teacher for 32 years, leaving an incomparable legacy. With a good word for all he touched, he stood out as a superb exemplar of the irrepressible human spirit. A man of honor and integrity, he found ways to make a difference in the lives of so many - students, colleagues, and fellow Virginians. He exhibited a passion for excellence, and he relished every day as if it were his last. I am honored to have been his friend.

One of my professors 1982-1984
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
My condolences to Dr. Scolnick's family. I remember how I used to bother him in class with my constant questions, but he always handled my ignorance with a wry smile and a question about my question. He made it easy to learn instead of be spoon-fed, and I appreciated his teaching methods. I took his lessons and challenges to "be a part of the government, not just a bystander," that I have been a public servant since graduating in 1984.

Joe Scolnick will be remembered by his students as a thinking man's professor and a challenger of popular thought.

Student for POLS 101, 1998
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Joe Scolnick was a rare and special man, who brought warmth and excitement to whatever the topic of conversation might be. I remember when he announced the first test in POLs 101. He had talked about Politics in a manner that more closely resembled a late night show's monologue, that I had no idea what to study. His way of relating concepts and ideas into current and past events was masterful. I passed the course with flying colors and have tried to use some of the same techniques in my class room. My favorite quote of his was explaining the first amendment, "The right of my fist, ends at your nose!" You have to love that!!!

I was a student in his class in Fall '73.
Memorial, Tribute,

I enjoyed Joe's class and respected his intelligence very much. He was very interested in music and was taking piano lessons at the same time I was. He attended all of my performances, which I really appreciated. He once said to me,"Kathy, if you don't have command of the piece in 3 months, then put it aside". Over the years, I have seen him at many school functions and he always talked to me and asked about my family by name.
His death is a great loss for the college and community. I will miss him.

He was my professor for POLS 101 at UVA-Wise in the Fall 2003.
Memorial, Tribute,

It was my third semester at Wise before I transferred to UVA. I remember like it was yesterday, on the first day of class. You have no idea what to expect and how Mr. Scolnick was going to operate the course. Well, it was a joy having him as my professor. Professor Scolnick was very intelligent with his topics of discussion and very delightful whenever I approached him with questions. I have never had a professor that was so excited about teaching a course more so than Mr. Scolnick was. It was very exciting to watch him teach because everyday in class, he always spoke with wisdom. Mr. Scolnick was not only a great teacher, but a wonderful person as well. May God bless his family and friends and may God bless him!!!

We had the pleasure of having him for an International Relations class.
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
It was our first semester at UVAW after transferring from a community college. We are a 30 something married couple and have 3 small children, in addition we own our own business. Needless to say, fitting college into that schedule is a rough one. We had many professors who did not understand (or did not care) if we had to miss due personal reasons, whether it be business or family. Professor Scolnick was the exception. He always asked about our children and if one of us had to miss due to illness, he always asked how we were feeling. As a result of our hectic schedule, we contemplated dropping out of college. Professor Scolnick always had words of encouragement to offer. His class was the last one of the day, and he alwyas managed to make in an enjoyable one. He was truly special. Even though his lectures sometimes got a little off track, my husband and I learned more in his class than any of our others - and not just about international relations - many times it was about life lessons; and those are invaluable.

Memorial, Tribute,

The passing of Dr. Scolnick is truly a saddening event. He was a brilliant man that was always full of knowledge and laughter. He met everyday with enthusiasm and hope. For students he was a familiar voice that proudly echoed into the hallways. He was our laughter on a dull Monday morning. He was a man that was willing to spend his time sharing his knowledge with us purely for our benefit. Dr. Scolnick was a professor that set the standards for other professors. He was a part of the college family, and he helped bring UVA-Wise to life. His personality was vibrant and I think it can best be captured in a joke he used to tell his students. "What does a snail say when he's riding on a turtle's back? Whee!!!" Dr. Scolnick won't be forgotten. His spirit was too strong.

Since leaving UVA Wise to attend the University of Kentucky in my home state, I have periodically glanced back at the website to keep up on current events. This visit to the site was a sad one. I never thought that someone could make Pol. Sci. interesting, but he did. I will always remember how he talked about George Washington as if they had grown up together and were pals. He was a wonderful man who was available and willing to talk to us when we needed him and always had a great sense of humor. My prayers go out to the family and loved ones that he has left behind. I feel that my education from UVAW adequately prepared me for law school and the future. Professor Scolnick had a great part in that, for this I am eternally grateful. He was a staple at UVAW and I am only saddened that incoming students won't get the "Scolnik Experience". To his family, you are in my prayers, and to Professor Scolnick, THANK YOU!!

What was immediately obvious was his enthusiasm for life, love of teaching, and the respect he had for all of his students. And, of course, that voice! He really left a big footprint at CVC, and it is nice to scroll through this tribute site and see how many lifes he touched.

I knew Mr. Scolnick as a very competitive tennis player back in 1974. He would frequently assist me with pointers to help improve my game. I still practice many of the strategies he shared. He'll truly be missed!
