How did you know him?

I took his political science class.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Mr. Scolnick was truly a special man. I've never met anyone like him. He was one of a kind. He had such a positive outlook on life and always offered such great views on success. He believed in all of his students. I had the priviledge of talking to him one on one for an interview and he was just so willing to give advice and most of all, just talk about life. I'll miss him greatly and remember him always. He's truly unforgettable.

How did you know him?

Although I never had class with Dr. Scolnick, I often talked to him while on walks around campus.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Dr. Scolnick was a great man. I will miss seeing him walking around the halls and around campus on nice days. Dr. Scolnick and I would often talk about music, the arts, and Charlottesville (my hometown). I loved to hear his stories about UVa and his experiences in Charlottesville, as well as his vivid conversations about music, which he loved extensively. In fact, it was his love and knowledge for music and the arts that I found most intriguing. It was this memory that remained in my mind yesterday, especially as we performed our last piece at the Chamber Music Concert, dedicated in his memory. Dr. Scolnick will certainly be missed.

I had a Policial Science class with him.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I used to be the editor of the Jimson Weed, and every semester I would have to carry around boxes of the journal to put in every building. Dr. Scolnick used to stop me as I traveled from building to building to talk about the journal. Back before I even had him in class, he'd talk to me for a long time about the journal and about his love for poetry/writing. He loved to tell me stories about going to various readings and how honored he felt when people would ask him to read something to them. I suppose what I'll remember most about him was his passion for absolutely everything. He genuinely loved teaching and obviously loved reading. He was rarely without a smile on his face and a big booming welcome that you could hear for miles around. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I will miss hearing his voice in the halls of Smiddy.

How did you know him?

I am a former student of many classes that Prof. Scolnick taught (Class of 1996). We got along very well because of our mutual love for knowledge & discussion. Our opposing political view points often served as a springboard for indepth chats. I found him to be a man of extreme intelligence, an even greater wit, & one full of compassion. He made it a point to learn to say my name correctly, which impressed me, and symbolizes in my eyes yet another quality he possessed which was to make others feel like they were significant to him. I was late for class MANY times, yet, when I came into the room he would always say, "So glad you could join us today", in his well-known humerous tone. Then, he'd take out his class list and mark me present for the day before returning to lecturing. I witnessed him help students academically, emotionally and on occassion, financially. After leaving the college, I have encountered Prof Scolnick only a few times, but he never failed to remember me and I won't forget him, ever.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
May the Holy Spirit comfort you in your time of loss. Though there is sorrow in death, remember that Prof Joe enjoyed great joys in life, teaching and the things he loved.

How did you know him?

I took a Political Science class taught by Professor Scolnick nearly 15 years ago. My daughter, Kristen Maggard McReynolds, a UVA-Wise graduate majoring in Political Science, also had the pleasure of knowing Professor Scolnick.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Joe Scolnick was perhaps my favorite professor at Clinch Valley College (UVA-Wise). I well remember his friendly personality, humor, and warm smile. I really enjoyed his passionate, informative, and entertaining lectures. I remember a phrase he often used when getting off track. "...But I digress." I'm sorry my son, Andrew, a UVA-Wise freshman, won't have the pleasure and benefit of his instruction.

Memorial, Tribute,

Dr. Scolnick was an unforgettable man, with an unforgettable voice. He always had something to say to you. I didn’t know him that well, but I had a few brief conversations with him. I could just tell how intelligent he was just by a few words. He will be greatly missed here at Wise as a professor and friend.

Mr Scolnick was the professor from my pol sci class in the fall of 04

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
It’s hard to describe somebody like professor scolnick. People like him just seem to have this natural likabiliity. He was just one of those people that never seemed to have a bad day. He was always sharp and knowledgeable, but was made his class was two things: 1) his booming voice and 2) his hilarious tangents about everything from his younger days to his love of spongebob. He was always fair and willing to let you talk during class and talk with you afterwards. But what I’ll remember most about him was his grandfatherly personality. He always had such a warm aura around him. Anyone that has ever met the man will miss him. I know I will.

How did you know him?

I took two political science classes with Professor Scolnick and he was my advisor.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Professor Scolnick had a way of getting "off track" throughout the class period. I think that might have been why I liked him at first. But I quickly realized that he wasn't really off track at all. His "digressions" were always meaningful and taught a lesson that political science alone could not teach. He taught what was important, even if it wasn't entirely related to class. He was always sincere and he was always enthusiastic about whatever it was he was talking about. I won't forget the way he waltzed into class with a smile and a "hello, hello, hello!" and I definitely won't forget what a kind hearted, gentle person he was. I am truly glad I had the pleasure of knowing Joseph Scolnick. I hope he knew how much he was loved and admired.

Dr. Scholnick was my professor, mentor and friend. UVA-Wise Class of 2002

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
"Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort." -Franklin Delanor Roosevelt Dr. Scholnick was the epitome of a great teacher and scholar. His lectures were passionate and vibrant. The intensity of his character could be heard for miles and will be felt for decades. The brilliant, comical and often poetic gentleman who began every class with his trademark "Good morning, Good morning" will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Thank you Joe.

I was surprised to hear of Professor Scolnick's passing. Every day he would walk into the room and greet us with "Hello, hello, hello" then proceed to talk about wrestling and somehow tie it into the meatballs of the constitution. I always made it a point to make his class. He was a friendly face on campus and will be sorely missed.

Smiddy lobby (where I have spent most of my time at Wise, and he did when he was not teaching)

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
To start off, I would like to say that I could never concentrate while taking a test in another room because of that powerful voice of his. It wasn't because I didn't enjoy it, it was because I only wish I had the voice he had. The man was and is a great speaker. He was not only a very intelligent individual, he was very humorous to those who he spoke to in the lobby. There were many times when I was studying for test and I would stop just to listen to him speak to another person. There is not many people in the world I would stop something I was doing to just to admire. I would say I never had the pleasure to have a class with Dr. Scolnick, but if you ever been in Smiddy, you did. He will be missed and Smiddy will never be the same without him. However, I believe future students will hear his voice echo in smiddy's walls.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
My first impression of the faculty at the University of Virginia's College at Wise came from Dr. Scolnick. As I walked into Smiddy 100, on my first day of class in the fall of 2003, I was startled by Dr. Scolnick's deep voice and comical personality. I remember asking myself, "How did this guy become a college professor?" A few weeks later Dr. Scolnick had won me over and I realized how incredible he was. Whenever I think back on the two years that I spent at UVA-Wise, Joe Scolnick is the one face that I will never forget.

I knew Dr. Scolnick from his political science class

Memorial, Tribute,

Dr. Scolnick was a great man and great educator. No matter how my day had been going, at some point during his class he always made me laugh. I only met Dr. Scolnick this semester but I feel that I am very lucky to have had the chance to take his class, because I not only learned about political science but I also learned alot of life lessons from the stories that he would share. The last thing that he said to my class on Monday as we were leaving was, are you going to stay back with the turkeys or soar with the eagles, he was always challenging his students to be the best they could be. Dr. Scolnick will be greatly missed at UVA wise.

Dr. Scolnick was and will remain one of my favorite professors at UVa Wise. I was never interested in political science, but he always made class so enjoyable and entertaining. He always loved talking with and getting to know his students, and his voice will be unforgettable by everyone who knew him. Even after a year, I can read a student's name, and hear his voice saying it during our roll call. I will never forget his voice, his jokes, his love of cartoons, or his caring personality. He not only will be very dearly missed, he already is.

I had Dr. Scolnick for Poli Sci 101, Spring 2004.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I can't say that I enjoyed the material covered in Dr. Scolnick's class, but I can, without a doubt say that I enjoyed going into his class everyday just because of him. Every single day he greeted our class with a deep, "Hello, Hello, Hello!". He always "digressed" to conversations about how grape soda could solve any of life's problems. He always got Mallory Mullins and I confused so I don't really know if he ever knew which one I was, but it doesn't matter...I knew who he was and he is someone I'll never forget. He will be greatly missed. I've very blessed to have been able to be taught many lessons by Dr. Joseph Scolnick. God Bless his family.

Memorial, Tribute,

Dr. Scolnick was all knowing. No matter what questions were asked in class, he always had an answer even if it didn't always answer the question; which made him so funny and made class so interesting. He was so intelligent and smart...he was the reason I majored in Political Science. I will always remember his jokes and his advice. He was my advisor and always had faith in me. I appreciated that more than he probably knew. Dr. Scolnick will be greatly missed. He has left a legacy at UVA-Wise that will live on throughout the history of the college. Thank you Dr. Scolnick for helping shape the lives of college students and for your dedication to Political Science. My love and prayers to all who knew him.

Memorial, Tribute,

I resumed studies at UVA last semester after being away from school for seventeen years. Dr. Scholnick was there then and it was a real comfort to see a familiar face upon my return. This was my second semester taking his classes since I've been back and he was just simply a burst of encouragement for me. His life stories and light-hearted views fascinated me and his knowledge and wisdom seemed boundless. I had a tremendous amount of respect for him because of his quest for learning something new never ended. He often tried to instill life lessons in his lecture. Sometimes he would "digress" as he would say but I never left his class without learning something I didn't know before I went in. God bless the administration for they have a tough task ahead in trying to replace him. Not many people have the mind and the heart that Joe Scholick had. I will miss him dearly.

I had four classes with Professor Scolnick from 2001-2004

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I remember always looking for my "Scolnick" class each semester and making sure that it would fit in. I can't say that I loved my political science classes but I did love having Scolnick for them. He was more than a professor he was a mentor for every student in his class. I remember our classes being so full students would sit on the steps because the seats were full. I can still see him on 9-11-01 standing infront of our class with a shaky voice talking about the attacks on our country. He stated his opinion and listened to others as they stated theirs. He gave every person the same respect whether it was a comment on how 9-11 affected them or how they felt about the latest Spongebob episode. The last time I spoke with him was at summer graduation 2004 when he stood beside me and wished me luck in my future and told me he would miss having me in his class. I looked forward to those classes and feel such a loss for those students that will never experience those lectures from a man that knew more than political science because he also knew people.

I work at Food Lion in Wise and almost every time I worked, Joe Scolnick would come in and would smile and wave. He would get a few things and then make his way to the candy/toy machines to get his Palermos. He always had a ready supply of quarters and always hoped for a new Palermo to come out. Prof. Scolnick was always kind and fun to talk to and I will miss him dearly. I will always wish and miss seeing him walk through the doors of the store.

Memorial, Tribute,

We have lost somone very very special. Dr. Scolnick was the kindest, warmest person i have ever known. This is not only a loss to those who knew him, but the community, the school, and countless students who will never get to say they had Joe Scolnick for a class. Everyday, he would come in with that warm smile, and a cheerful greeting, and no matter how your day was going, after being in his class, you got the feeling the day was going to be ok. He gave us so many important life lessons in his class, that when he would go off topic, i would actually find myself taking notes on the life lessons that he would share. I have learned so much from Joe Scolnick. He had a way of lighting up a room with his personality, his presence was so wonderful, he was like the personification of goodness, you couldnt help but be in a better mood when he would see you and his eyes would light up and he would greet you with a warm hello. Everyone who knew him has a Scolnick story, something he said, something he taught, a life lesson he told us, or even a joke he told. Even people who never had the pleasure of having him as a teacher all knew him. I believe we all should share our Scolnick stories and lessons with everyone, letting his legacy live on through the lessons he taught us, by sharing them with others, and saying "I learned that from Joseph Scolnick". There just aren't many people like him in the world, his kindness, his warmness, and his smile will never be forgotten. The last thing he said to our class was "So are you going to hang with the turkeys, or soar with the eagles? I say soar with the eagles!" Then he let us go. Giving us all that one last piece of advice that we will never forget. I know that there is a very special place for him in heaven, and i can only hope that i can grow to be half the man he was, so that i can see him again...someday. God Bless Him. And thank you Dr. Scolnick..for everything.

How did you know him?

He was my professor, advisor, mentor and friend

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Dr. Scolnick was a one of kind professor and person. If it was not for him, I would not have chosen political science as a major. I enjoyed his classes because you not only learned about political science, but you learned life lessons. He was a most generous man, a man of great wisdom, and was sure to put a smile on anyone's face. He will be missed, but rest assure that his memory will remain in the hearts and minds of all those that had the pleasure and honor of knowing such an intelligent and wonderful individual!

How did you know him?

Through class and as a work study in Smiddy Hall.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
The halls of Smiddy rang everyday with Dr. Scolnick's mighty, powerful, and recognizable voice. Dr. Scolnick was a wonderful professor but more than that, he was a caring professor. Whether you had Scolnick for class or not, you still knew him and he knew you or made it a point to get to know you. He was a great man in every aspect and will be truly missed. The halls of Smiddy will never again be what they were without his mighty voice ringing thorugh them. May God Bless his family and friends.
