This was the first year that I had taken a class under Professor Scolnick. Naturally, I already knew who he was because of his voice and I had some friends that had already taken his classes. One of the first things I noticed was that he really looked like he enjoyed what he was doing and he seemed to really care about students. Once he was telling a story of; "how I never told a student that they couldn't do anything". He said this person wanted to be some sort of engineer and had already failed lower math, but "not once did I discourage this student from being an engineer". Just hearing that small story about another student really helped me in my own student career. I barely knew him, but he will definitely be missed at The University of Virginia's College at Wise. |

I’ll miss Dr. Scolnick very much. He was one of the most well read and erudite persons I had ever known. The universality of his knowledge was truly amazing. He could converse authoritatively on topics as diverse as history, political science, literature, foreign languages, religion, as well as comic books and professional wrestling. Although Joseph Scolnick was a serious man, he never took himself seriously. I’m proud to have called him my colleague and friend. |

I never had Joe for a class. I didn't Know him as a teacher. I only knew Joe from talking to him at the local comic shop or running into him on campus. The thing i liked best about him was he was agreat big kid, much like myself. He may have been a great professor but I knew him as the guy who loved to talk about wrestling at the comic shop. I remember many conversations about what had happend on manday night Raw that week. I loved the fact that here was a college professor, well educated, respected by all, yet he did not hide the fact that he loved professional wrestling. I loved to hear his booming voice talking about what the Rock or Tripple H had done. This may not mean anything to anyone else but, you see, I am a professional wrestler and for such a well educated man to accept and even love what I do instead of bad mouthing or making fun of it was touching to me. I will miss you Joe, and I will bust a few heads for ya. My next match is for you. |

I loved Professor Scolnick. He was quite a character. He tried to teach a moral lesson and provide inspiration to everyone. He believed in the greatness of our country and the human spirit. I loved his lessons and his jokes. Q: What did the snail, riding on top of the turtle, say? A: Wheeeee!! His spirit and sense of humor never aged. He loved the WWE, Spongebob, Hey Arnold, and comic books. He will be missed. I'm glad that I was able to know him a little. OTB!!!!!!! You did good. |

When I first came to the college, my office was in Smiddy with Dr. Scolnick. He often came by my office for a chat and ask "how are the nurses"? Joe and I had many conversations about the importance of a well educated nursing profession and he believed in our program. He listened during times when I needed to discuss important issues with him. I would like for his family to know that he was well loved, respected, and had many friends in the Wise community. |

I dont think I can put into words how much Dr. Scolnick meant to me, which is weird because if anyone ever saw the two of us talking--neither of us would shut up. Dr. Scolnick really helped me out when I went to NYC for my internship, and he was so proud of me for doing it. I was at my graduation going to give him a book that was signed by Chris Matthews because I really believe that I was able to go and work at the show about politics because everything I ever learned about politics, and even the confidence I have in myself came from Dr. Scolnick. In fact, almost everyday Professor Scolnick would write me telling me to OTB--Outlast The Bastards (his motto).
He wanted me to go on to grad school in International Realtions, his specialty. He was working really hard on my application recommendations and I had the good fortune of being able to see him the day before he died. He told me he wanted me to get into a good grad school and hoped that his letters would help.
I just wished that I could have told him that it is not just his letters, but his talks in and outside of classes and his just believing in me that meant so much and shapped me into the person I am today. I loved Dr. Scolnick a lot and I miss him so much.
He always told me that he wanted me to be better than him if I became a professor, and I just dont think it is possible to be better than him..Someone so passionate about his job and his role in the lives of students. I think he thought of us as his kids, and he wanted us to grow and mature and move on to better things..he loved teaching and he loved his students....I dont think I could ever be as good as he was.
I know right now he is up in heaven now looking down on us, after having a chat about politics with the saints.
I love you Dr. Scolnick and thanks for everything! |

Dr. Scolnick was an awesome professor and taught me so many things in his political science course. He not only taught me about the government, but he taught me life lessons. Nearly every day he would digress about his childhood, comic books, or spongebob. I have never met a man with such a multi-faceted personality. The excitement he had to show us every day in class that wonderful personality will never be witnessed again and it saddens me to think this. His booming voice, digressions, and lessons learned will truly be missed by all. I only wish that others had had a chance to know him. |

Dr. Scolnick was the type of man that you can never forget. I will always miss seeing him around campus where he would smile and say "Hello." He always knew how to make me smile or laugh, and was always willing to help me in any way that he could. Every semester when I looked for a Political Science course, I would look for one that he taught. He was one of my favorite professors and I will miss him greatly. He was one of the most intelligent people I will ever have the pleasure of knowing. His lectures, digressions, and destinctive voice will always be remembered. His zeal for life was always an encouragement to me and his lectures, more often than not, had a message of encouragement. He has taught me so many things, not just about Political Science, but about life. For that, I will always be grateful.
Thank you Dr. Scolnick, for being you! |

Like others who have posted here, I too recall his many expressions of 'But I digress' and holding forth on seemingly unrelated topics. More importantly, I remember his deep commitment to democratic values and his even-deeper love of intellectual give-and-take. Although I resisted his attempts to turn me toward political science as a major, he strongly supported my academic pursuits as a historian and often referred to me as a 'real scholar.' Dr. Scolnick will be missed for far more than his booming baritone and multiple digressions. He was the quintessential gentlemanly scholar and a notable Virginian. |

I remeber how he would always talk about Kim Possible being one of his favorite cartoons. I loved the way he made analogies. His last class with us on Monday the 5th he told us that no one would hand anything to us and that if we wanted to get something out of life we had to get out there and do it ourselves. He will truly be missed. Rest in peace Professor Scolnick. |

Dr. Scolnick was such a kind man with a true passion for government and politics. I hate that he will miss the outcome of the conflict in Iraq, he followed it diligently. I imagine that up in heaven he is still reading at least 2 books a week, and trying to stay on top of what's happening in international relations. A professor can touch the lives of so many people and Joe was no exception to this. Everyone that had one of his classes felt that they had a personal relationship with him. This is because Dr. Scolnick opened himself up to his students like no other. Dr. Scolnick, I want you to know that you will be missed. I appreciate everything you did for me. They say that when a person enters college, they will inevitably encounter a professor who will have a lasting impact on their lives; a professor who will inspire your to fullfill their potential, challenge you both intellectually and creatively, and to help you realize things about yourself that you wouldn't discover on your own.
Joe Scolnick was such a professor. He taught me a lot of things, both as a professor and as a friend. He expanded my knowledge of the American system of government and how democracy works and taught me that you can be both a well-respected and knowledgable college professor while still being a kid at heart. He was one of a kind in every sense of the word and will be missed by everyone who's lives he touched. |

Dr. Scolnick was such a great man. He was so personable and funny - he would always talk about crazy things and then throw in his random opinions about politics and America and, of course, Turkey. His heart was really to make the world better. I have often thought of him since my graudation in 2002. I hope he's in heaven receiving many rewards for his work here on earth. |

I remember the day I signed up for the political science class, I was thinking this will be fun...but it really was, professor Scolnick always seemed to have little jokes or stories for every lesson, I loved when he would "digress" or when he would say "ah, ha!". I will never forget the time I was trying to study for a test for his class before it statred and I could hear him coming down the hall, he came up and started talking to me and the lady that was sitting beside of me, we talked about politics, even though he had strong views and oppinions, he would always respect the students oppinions as well. There is so much that can be said about professor Scolnick, it is hard to try and sum him up, he was an amazing person, someone that everyone could look up to and admire. He will not be forgotten!! |

I had the honored of meeting Joe Scolnick at the Melungeons Fifth Union. He gave a lecture on the Melungeons and Turks.

Memorial, Tribute,

My condolences to Joe's family and his friends and co-workers. The book that he and Brent Kennedy wrote, "From Anatolia to Appalachia: A Turkish-American Dialogue," taught me so much about history. He was a great man in my eyes, I know he will be missed, people like him are rare. I will always remember his beamy smile too. |

The thought of no longer hearing Smiddy Hall echoing with the notoriously known voice of Dr.Scolnick deeply saddens me. He was a man full of knowledge on every subject matter from politics to the latest Spongebob episode. It is astonishing at how one person has effected so many others lives. I will truly miss going to his class each day and hearing his lessons on life. |

I never had a class with Dr Scolnick, but I recall my first roommate in 1998 always came back to McCraray after class and he would say "Scolnick" in a very sly way. It was his term of endearment.
I remember seeing Dr Scolnick on campus, at lectures, graduations, processions and the like. I do remember his booming voice.

You could say i was a teacher's pet in his class, b/c a buddy and me gave him a bag of tootsie rolls the first day of class to suck up as you would say. We didn't need to suck up b/c he would visit us in the registrar's office almost religiously to steal the tootsie rolls out of our candy dishes, so he liked us extremely well already. You would hear his deep barotone voice all throughtout Smiddy Hall. Everyday i would pass by him and he would say my name with such heart that it will hurt from this day b/c i hear him say my name in my head all the time. :)This man was the greatest and i will miss him very deeply. No other prof will touch me like he had. Thank you for being there Dr. Scolnick.
p.s. tootsie rolls won't be eaten the same ever again. |

Every class Dr. Scolnick taught, I made sure I took every one. He taught me a great deal. I shared his love of politics and policy. He was my advisor and gave me the best guidance for my future. I will miss him greatly for his kindness and help. I would not be where I am today without Dr. Scolnick. God Bless you Sir. |
