Professor Scolnick taught me during my first semester as a college student. He not only taught me about our government, but also taught me how to function in the college atmosphere. I will never forget the day I went to talk to him in his office. I was afraid of the last test, because it determined my grade for the class. He told me, " Olivia, if you want to fly in college you can't keep walking around like a turkey." I never asked why he used "turkey" instead of "chicken," but I went back to my dorm room and study for his test. Sure enough my grade was what I wanted, and the next semester when I saw him, he said, "Well Olivia I see you aren't still walking around like a turkey." Thank you Professor Scolnick for teaching me to fly in college, and to stop being a turkey.May the Lord be with you Professor Scolnick as you enter into eternal happiness... |

As I was preparing for a test that was scheduled on last Wedensday I got on the college website to check my e-mail and seen that we had lost Doc. Scolnick..I was in shock and it saddened me instantly.. its just not the same without him.. We have lost a great teacher and a great man.. I feel for the family REST in Peace Joe Scolnick |

I first Dr. Scolnick during our first visit to UVA-Wise six years ago. My daughter, Emily Crawford, subsequently chose to attend UVA-Wise -- and provide regular reports on Dr. Scolnick (from the perspective of being one of his students).

Memorial, Tribute,

From my first accidental meeting with Dr. Scolnick six years ago I have thought that UVA-Wise has benefitted greatly from his presence on campus. In my chance encounter with him in the college cafeteria, where he invited my to join him for breakfast, it was clear then that he was not a shy, quiet professor. I thought at the time that this was the kind of person any college needs on its campus, someone who can motivate and stimulate students. Joseph Scolnick was a scholar, was outspoken on many issues, and engaged his students. His personality was an asset in that students quickly learned that his mission in life was to teach them how to think. They also learned quickly that he wanted students to express their thoughts --and engage their peers and faculty in debate on important issues of the day. As a parent, I will miss reading about Dr. Scolnick and his many contributions on campus, in the community, and in larger academic circles. Mark H. Crawford Annandale, VA |

To say that Dr. Scolnick was a wonderful educator would be stating the obvious. His wit, intellect, and passion impacted all who crossed his path. When you took a Scolnick class you knew that, among other things, you were going to be given not just an education in political science...but an education in life as well. Dr. Scolnick had an indelible ability to connect history with the world today. He knew that to study the past was to learn about the future. However, more than an amazing professor, Dr. Scolnick was an amazing individual. Reading other's comments, you can truly gain an understanding of the type of man that he was. Ever willing to lend a helping hand or thoughtful ear, Dr. Scolnick personified what it meant to be an "educator." He taught his students that education was not merely the acquisition of information. Rather he showed us how to live a life worthy of our admiration. Dr. Scolnick may not have had any children of his own...but for the thousands of students he taught, we will all consider him family. He showed us what it meant to be a decent man in a world of ego. More than a great professor...Dr. Scolnick was a great man. That's all any of us can hope to be. |

Dr. Joe Scolnick...there will be no other to come to UVa-Wise or anywhere else for that matter, that can match him. It’s not often that a professor has the impact on an entire campus community like Dr. Scolnick; that quality is a rare find nowadays. His dedication and passion for lifelong learning was apparent in every facet of his life, and he shared that passion with those whom he came in contact with every day. Discussion was always welcomed no matter the topic as was the opportunity to invest time in and learn of another's life, regardless of their station. Dr. Scolnick had my utmost respect and love for the person he was and strived to be. I think his biggest life lesson for us was the way in which he lived his life; if we could all be half as fortunate to live as such. He was a man of value and integrity to his core. Able to observe him in the faculty senate over the last couple of years, I saw these qualities even more and have admired his zeal and desire to champion the college. I will miss the parliamentarian function he, the debating pro, made sure to serve as, for Robert’s Rules of Order is never out of style. I am saddened because now I will not have my last Scolnick class in the spring I've been looking forward to...but in my selfishness, I am more saddened for those students who did not and will not get to experience this wonderful man whom we dearly love. December 7 will forever be a somber day because the joy of experiencing one of God's best individuals on earth is no longer possible; but how comforting it is to know that such an individual is now in heaven looking down and protecting us. I am HONORED and proud to have had the opportunity to be one of Scolnick's kids. "The mug girl”

Dr. Scolnick had an impressive outlook towards life and he emphasized this through his teachings. He always had time for his students and spongebob. Dr. Scolnick had an enjoyable way of breaking down politics into the "Scolnick way" so even the people not majoring in political science could understand. He was the Grand Marshall for my Graudation (May 2005) he was so excited about it, he was a true leader. I will miss that strong powerful voice singing through the hallways, but he'll always be a hero to me. God Bless your Family, Rest in Peace. |

Memorial, Tribute,

I have known Joe from almost his first days on the grounds. He lived in the Faculty Row apartment where Jane Meade-Dean now has her office. I met Joe through a mutual friend, Zouqul Chowdhury. Joe, Zouq, and Bob Darcy were friends at UK where they were all in graduate school. I was instantly impressed with Joe's range of knowledge which included sports, literature, music, comic books, and art and his respect for people of all social and economic levels. He had a strong and genuine intolerance for those who, in his eyes, abused their position and power; especially, if their action affected others or the College. It was obvious that he loved teaching and hoped all his students would be successful in life. I think I managed to win a few debates over the years, but with Joe's inherent joy for debate, knowledge, and stamina, it was never easy! I will say we always ended our debates with our friendship and mutual respect intact. Some of my fondest memories of Joe are from the early years and I will share a couple of those for those who may not have known Joe then. Many may not not know that Joe was a letterman on the varsity tennis team at UVA and coached the freshman team there when he was in graduate school. Joe was kind enough to play tennis with Zouq and me. I was a great frustration to Joe in that I always wanted to play and have fun, when Joe wanted to practice. As in debate, Joe was highly competitive when he played tennis and I'm not sure he has forgiven me yet for some losses we suffered as doubles partners in a few local tournaments. I learned a great deal about tennis from Joe and any good I did as the tennis coach at UVa - Wise stemmed from his knowledge and example. I also have a great memory of helping Joe shop (several trips) for his piano in the Tri Cities. Joe was well prepared with technical details and a sense of what he wanted. I was the driver and an amused observer, but shocked Joe when I suggested to the salesman that he could probably discount the price if he chose. The College has lost a great friend, teacher, and advocate. I am not sure who can replace Joe's council and attention to detail in the Faculty Senate. I will miss his friendship, council, and unforgettable voice.

Not only did he have a passion for political science, but he loved the simplistic cartoons of Hey Arnold and Spongebob. These aspects made him so unique and interesting. He was truly a passionate learner and teacher. He will never be replaced and the college will truly miss him. I had Professor Scolnick for quite a few classes as I was a political science major. We often had many discussions about the U.S. Navy as I am now a Naval officer and so was he. He also wrote a letter of recommendation for me just this past summer for entrance into Regent University School of Law where I am now at.
I am deeply saddened by this tragic event, and can easily say that Professor Scolnick was without a doubt my favorite professor and a dear mentor and friend.

I do not know how my life would have turned out if I had not met Dr. Joseph Scolnick. I came UVA Wise with the intentions of going to Pharamacy School but several of the upper-classmen I met told me that I had to take a "Scolnick" class. I took their advice and my second semester I took two classes under Dr. Scolnick and loved every minute of them. About half way through that semester I know exactly what I was going to major in, Polical Science. Over that next three years I would take atleast one Scolnick class every semester until I graduated in 2004. Every morning he would great his classes with a huge grin on his face and some out landish story about something he had watched on television the previous night. I will never forget this, everyday in class he would walk in and say, "HA HA HA, There is Johnny Hampton and his fourty-year old hat." Dr. Scolnick will always have a special place in my life, he was my teacher, advisor and I must say he was my friend. They may hire someone to fill his position but he will never be replaced. Rest in Peace Dr. Scolnick, you will be missed. |

My heart is deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Scolnick's passing yet I smile when I recall the gentleman that many of us called the "Howard Cossell of CVC". From his debates with Dr. George Hawpe, to his vision of marshmallow cars (no accidents since you bump off, and in case the car breaks down you can eat it) he was an interesting man. He brought to many sons and daughters of Appalachia a different perspective and he opened our minds (and hearts) to much more than the political process |

I met Dr. Scolnick soon after he arrived on campus in 1973 his booming voice and incredible wit and charm really impressed me(I was fifteen years old at that time) I would see Dr. Scolnick around town and on campus and he would always have a warm greeting and was interested in how my life was going. I started taking classes in 1974 with the ultimate goal of graduation, but working and rasing a family took presidece over college and it took many years before I could return full time. Upon my return he greeted me as though I never left. I will never forget the class I had with him on 9-11-01. He was such a rare gentleman brilliant charming, and he shared his GOD given talents with everyone he met. Those of us who were lucky enough to know him will keep his memory alive , I will always have the utmost respect for you Dr. Scolnick. "Commander Scolnick," this is the way I usually greeted him, because he was a Naval Officer and he always seemed to be in command of any situation. We had many hallway conversations and they were very enjoyable to me. He was such a mannerly and classy person. Regrets? Yes, only one but a major one. I cheated myself by not auditing some of his classes. However, I was partially rewarded because whenever I had a class in an adjoining classroom to him at Smiddy Hall, I got to enjoy listening to his lectures - he did have a commanding voice. Joe, I treasure having served with you. You set a great example of what a college professor should be. With admiration and respect, Bill J. Lee (or "Dollar Bill" as you called me.) |

Professor Scolnick had a way of getting "off track" during class. I think this might have been why I liked him at first. I quickly realized that he wasn't off topic at all, he was teaching us very important life lessons. In his "digressions", he taught his students more than political science alone could ever teach. He would tell us stories about his life and give us all kinds of advice. He wanted to get to know everyone and he was always willing to listen and have a chat.
Professor Scolnick wrote me a recommendation for my UVA application. He attended UVA, it's where he got his BA and his MA... and he seemed so proud that I was wanted to go to school there. He was, of course, more than willing to write my recommendation letter, but i dont think he could have had any idea of what it meant to me.
When I told him I got in and that I had chosen to go there, he got this big smile on his face and proceeded to give me all kinds of advice and information about everything from professors to courses and campus activities. He also told me he knew I would do well there. And I knew he meant it. I don't think he knew how much that meant to me. To have someone as highly regarded and as brilliant as Dr. Scolnick tell me that gave me so much confidence.
It makes me sad to think that I'll never hear his loud, cheerful voice greeting me with "Hello, hello, hello!!" and telling a story about Spongebob or his childhood. But I am truly glad that I had the pleasure of knowing Professor Joe Scolnick. UVAW will not be the same place without him, but he will be forever remembered for the kind hearted, warm and caring gentleman he was. |

Enthusiastic... Memorable... Wise... Dedicated.
These are four strong words. In truth, not many of us can count all four among our personal characteristics. Dr. Joseph Scolnick carried all four in wonderful abundance, and he shared these traits with all around him.
Perhaps the greatest tribute to any teacher is not just a personal remembrance, but the use of their teaching. I remember vividly many days in Dr. Scolnick's classes, although I am reaching back 20 years. I remember not as much of what he taught me as I should, but, I do remember some.
Over the last 21 years, I have used what I learned from Dr. Scolnick many times in many situations. A favorite Joe Scolnick paraphrase I keep in the front of my mind is, "The body politic is just a collection of people. And, in the end, people are the most interesting subject."
I have passed that one along to my two sons, Patrick and Colton. They both plan to attend UVa-Wise. I am sad they will not have the honor and pleasure of knowing Dr. Scolnick as I did. But, maybe they will know him a little through me, and know of him even more from the great part of himself now intricately woven into the fabric of The University of Virginia at Wise. |

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Prof. Scolnick. I truly enjoyed each and every class I took under this intelligent, kind, friendly, funloving man. The college will never be the same without him. I feel bad for all of the future poli sci majors who will not have the privilege to be a student of Prof. Scolnick. |

Dr. Scolnick and my mother were the only two people in this world that called me "CHRISTOPHER". Having Doc for quite a few classes I got to know him well. No matter when I saw him, whether it was years ago when I attended the school or when I would visit recently, he always greeted me with a warm welcome. God please Joe. He will be missed. |

I met Joseph Scolnick via Melungeon research, enjoyed the book he co-wrote with Kennedy, listened to his talks at various Melungeon Gatherings and enjoyed his wit and wisdom very much.

All of us who met or knew him are saddened by his loss. When the loss is one of your peers, it reminds one of their own mortality. If my life touches only one, then I will be satisfied to sit at Scolnick's feet.

Joe Scolnick was and will continue to be a UVA-Wise icon. He was always ready with a smile and a word of advice. You knew when Joe was in the building whether you were on the same floor or not. God Bless you Joe, you lived life like you meant it (the way we all should)! |

As I sat in an empty classroom today, I imagined Professor Scolnick walking in the door saying "Hello Everybody!" as he did everyday before class. He was so full of life and a kid at heart as he always said.
Smiddy Hall will never be the same without you.
You'll be greatly missed Professor Scolnick.
Rest in Peace. |

Joe Scolnick was a true advocate and champion of the classified staff at UVa-Wise. As part of the 50th Celebration, a luncheon was held to honor and recognize the staff for our service to the College. Joe chaired the committee charged with planning this event and was asked to speak on behalf of the faculty. With great eloquence, he conveyed to us our importance to this college. He knew the education of our students reached farther than the classroom, and that a student's success depended upon the efforts of every member of our college family, especially the staff.
On a more personal note, I will never forget the times when I would see Joe at Food City in Wise. He would always come up to me and ask "and what do we have in our cart today"? We would then discuss the contents of my cart; who ate what, etc. I'd get such a kick out of it.
The lives that have been touched by Joe Scolnick are numerous. And aren't we the lucky ones to have had the opportunity to know him, honor and pay tribute to this gentle man. We have truly been blessed. |

Out of all of the professors that I have come in contact with I would have to say that Dr. Scolnick had the most profound effect on me. I am extraordinarily saddened by this loss, and I regret that I will be unable to have him guide me futher in my academic pursuits. However, Dr. Scolnick has provided me with a mantra to live by, and that would be the mantra of perserverence. His unique voice and upbeat personality will be sorely missed, especially by myself. |

I had Dr. Scolnick for two classes during my time as a student at UVa-Wise, but I guess my last remeberance of him before I left the area was his interaction with Chris Davis. See, they both enjoyed a good talk about Spongebob and, of course, they were always humerous! I remember Dr. Scolnick brining Chris Spongebob candy that a student had gotten him for Chrismas, he said "I can't eat that stuff, it's too sticky!" I have to say during my time at Wise I never had a negative or non-entertaining converation with him. I know you will be missed by everyone in Wise, but there are many more in the state and around the country who will miss you as well! |
