Professor-Political Science Fall 05

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Professor Scolnick was the greatest! I looked forward to going to his class everyday. I was planning on taking one of his classes in the spring because I enjoyed his class so much. When we went to class that day and he never came I knew something was wrong. He would always come to class, always in a good mood saying "Hello, everybody."

I am so glad I got to take a "Scolnick" class and got to know him. He was always positive and I loved his motto "Outlast The Bastards"! He was always encouraging and told us often that we could do anything we wanted to.

He was the greatest!

The passing of Dr. Scolnick is such a great loss to the college and community. It is not possible to replace his knowledge, experience, and presence here at the college. I was fortunate enough to have him for Political Science in his final semester with us at the college. His smile, jolly laugh, enjoyable personality, and unmistakable voice will never be forgotten. May God be with his family and loved ones at such an extremely difficult time.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I had Dr. Scolnick for the first time during my Freshman year, and I immediately signed up to take him for my 3rd semester. He sought to teach his students not only about the subject, but also about themselves and life. His lectures were always full of interesting personal experiences and humorous stories. I'll miss attending his lectures and hearing "aha!" and "I can't help but digress". Through his love of teaching and his sense of humor he made learning a truly unique and enjoyable experience. He inspired those around him to do their best and to set high goals. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from him. He was part of UVa-Wise and it will never be the same without him.

As a professor, friend, and world traveler

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I did not have the pleasure of having Joe as a teacher but my wife did. However, we got to know him in a more informal setting. We went on a trip with The International Club in the spring of 2001 to Prague and Munich. I knew who Joe was prior to the trip but had never really gotten to know him as a person. Joe rode with us on the first leg of the trip, driving to the airport in Charlotte, NC. Joe stated very quickly that since he was not driving his job would be to keep the driver awake. We talked the whole way and by the time we arrived in Charlotte we felt like Joe was an old friend. The rest of the trip was the same way. Everyone divided up into their own groups and Joe was an important part of our group. Everywhere we went Joe was with us and he was very informative about little known facts about the area we were in. He pointed out that The Charles River Bridge in Prague was crooked and went into detail about how it ended up that way. While at the Dachau Concentration Camp Joe ran into someone that had a family member who was one of his friends. Joe has friends all over the world. Joe found out that my wife collects Winnie the Pooh items and never failed to pick up some little Winnie the Pooh trinket for her when he ran across it. The trip to Europe was supposed to be the highlight, but meeting and getting to know Joe actually became the highlight. When ever we talk about some event on the trip Joe's name always comes up. Our son,Alex, was looking forward to taking classes under Joe, because we had talked so much about him and his knowledge of political issues. Joe will be greatly missed but fondly remembered. We, The Boggs Family, send our heartfelt sympathy to his sister and family. May God comfort and protect you in the days and weeks to come.

It is very hard to put into words exactly how Joe Scolnick impacted my life. He provided the encouragement to see me through the first two difficult years of college, imbued me with the energy to major in Government, and like many others on this page, was there to extend his hand on graduation day. True to the naval adage "The Sea Yields To Knowledge", Dr. Scolnick, you have indeed charted my way and I will never forget you.

God bless and keep you.

I was a student in several of Dr. Scolnick's classes during my days at Clinch Valley College (1978-81). He was a great professor and his American Foreign Policy class was one of my favorite classes. I majored in Historu and Social Sciences at CVC. He was one reason why I chose that field. Today, I am the principal at Hurley Elem./Middle School and I hope some of Dr. Scolnick's leadership qulaities rubbed off on me. God Bless you Dr. Scolnick.

Acquaintance/Around Campus/Class of '04

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I graduated last year and a friend still in attendance at UVA-Wise told me the other day about Dr. Scolnick's passing. Being a Comm major, I never had the privilege of having Dr. Scolnick in class. However, I got the chance to talk to him on several occasions.

One moment that sticks out in my mind in particular was that he was gracious enough to grant our Television Production class a candid interview for a video project. Just from that half-hour interview, even if you never knew him, you could tell that the man had a keen intellect and a brilliant mind. He could have very easily been a top political analyst on CNN or even run for a high public office, but he chose to influence and instruct young minds on the path of higher education.

While a lot of us, including myself, may not have quite been on his intellectual level, he never saw it that way at all and never had a superiority complex. Despite the fact, he treated everyone as equals and had a true sense of class and humbleness about him. He had a great sense of humor; he would talk to anyone about anything, and he could tell you things that you never knew or things to make you think. And the distinctive tone of his voice would just make it stick in your head that much more.

Seeing the outpour of support on here and in the community is a true indication of what kind of man he really was. Dr. Scolnick will be sorely missed. My condolences and prayers to his friends and family.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
While I had my office in Smiddy Hall I had frequent chances to chat with Joe on a very personal basis. We spoke of politics, of course, but also about our theories of education and approaches to students to make learning more effective. My son Thad, who graduated from here in 1990, also had Joe as a professor. Though his calling was more in the area of the sciences, he loved Joe's classes because Joe had a way of making him feel important and made him learn something that was not his particular "bag". To me that's quite a talent, and Joe definitely had it. Students always wanted to be in his classes because as many have put it to me as an advisor, "he made learning entertaining but also meaningful". I served with Joe too on the Faculty Evaluation Committee, which he chaired at then. In this capacity I really recognized & appreciated Joe's sense of objectivity, fairness and balance in difficult decision-making situations. His sense of humaneness always stood out, even when some hard decisions had to be made. He made everyone feel worthy of themselves and knew how to praise accomplishments while encouraging further worthwhile efforts. A wonderful human being and a top-notch academic professional. We will miss Joe very, very much, but I feel like we all learned a great deal from him because of his humanity. Roman Zylawy

I was shocked to hear that Mr. Scolnick had passed away, I had only seen him the day before and he was his usual self. Mr. Scolnick is a man who can never be replaced, the University of Virginia's College at Wise will never be able to fill the shoes of such a great man. I really enjoyed Scolnick's classes, he was so funny and extremely smart, as well as fair. He was a wonderful eduactor who taught me a lot and I am forever greatful to the man. Scolnick's love for his students and dedication may have stemmed from the fact that he was actually a big child at heart. I will truly miss the man, I am just grateful I was able to have him as a professor!

Joe's passing is a great loss to the Dept of Social Sciences and this entire college. He was know as a person of principle. Everyone trusted him to do the just, fair thing, in any situation. That is why he was so often elected by his faculty colleagues to important committees that involved important decisions and judgement. He could be relied upon to be judicious, careful, thoughtful and fair. I dont know of a higher tribute an academic, or anyone, can receive.

I have so many fond memories of Joe. Once he passed the door of a conference room in Smiddy Hall, where several of us were gathering for a meeting. He stopped in to chat and somehow he and I started talking about yoga. (I had just started yoga classes, but he had been going for awhile.) All of a sudden, he dropped his books, put his hands over his head with palms together, placed the bottom of one foot on the inside thigh of his other leg, and stood perfectly still for several long moments in Tree Pose, a rather difficult yoga balancing posture. I still smile when I think of that as it embodies so many things about him - the way he embraced and enjoyed life: how he became an expert at most things he tackled; his steadiness and sense of place on this great, good earth; and always, always, the way he reached out to make connections to all those around him.
Namaste, Joe.

Joe and I were colleagues from the time that he came to what was then Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia until I retired in 1998.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
As confirmed Wahoos, Joe and I were always in agreement that the College we had chosen to devote our lives to should be something that the University in Charlottesville should be proud of sustaining, although he and I sometimes disagreed on how to achieve this goal.
Joe's extraordinary grasp of foreign affairs led me to consult him whenever I was puzzled about what was going on abroad, and Joe participated in some of the poetry readings that the English faculty sponsored. I remember in particular a very stirring reading he gave of Tennyson's The Charge of the Light Brigade.
During my last decade at the College, Joe became a backyard birdwatcher, and he and I had many long discussions about the birds coming to the feeders he put up in his backyard. Joe will prove hard for the College to replace—in knowledge, dedication, and congeniality.

As a student and advisee

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
It is hard to imagine the UVa-Wise campus without Joe Scolnick. While it’s a phrase that can be overused at times such as this, I cannot avoid it – Joe truly made an impact on my life, both academically and personally. Like many Government majors at the College, I took numerous classes under him, but on more than one occasion, I chose classes solely because he was the professor. Two instances come to mind when I think of him: (1) near the end of the fall semester in my senior year, I had completed all of my final exams except for one in his class. My grandmother passed away suddenly on the day of the exam and when I dropped into his office the following day, he not only said all the right things but he did all the right things as well. (2) After graduation, I was living and working in Washington, DC and applying for graduate school. I asked Joe to complete a couple of recommendation letters for me, to which he heartily agreed. However, as the deadline neared for a completed application, I was surprised to not have those in hand. One day at work, Joe called me – he was in a hospital bed recovering from his emergency bypass surgery … and apologized (!) for being so late with the letters. He said that he had completed the letters earlier and merely had to mail them. I received them shortly thereafter along with a handwritten note. Joe Scolnick was a classic gentleman and scholar. He will truly be missed.

Dr. Scolnick was one of the most energetic people I ever had the opportunity to meet. His voice coaxed you into wanting to learn what he wanted to teach, and always grabbed my attention, wherever I was. He showed much concern for his students, inside and outside of his classes, and he even spoke to those that he did not know well. This just shows how someone can be here one minute, and be gone the next, and how we often don't appreciate people until they are no longer here for us to express that appreciation. He is definitely missed.

God Bless

There are several things that made Dr. Scolnick stand out above the rest such as his jokes about snails and his thundering voice. The thing that made him stand out the most was his love for teaching. He once said he would lecture in the gym or on the football field if students wanted to take is class.
His stories were sometimes serious but usually very funny. He told us of a dream that he had where he was teaching Chinese. He said he could do it. He would just stay one chapter ahead of the students. This showed that he was determined to succeed in whatever life handed him.
As both a professor and a friend, he was a success. He was a friendly gentleman and really cared about his students. He will be greatly missed.

Dr Scolnick was one of those people that you could sit and listen to: it didn't matter what about, you could just listen. I signed up for his political science class to fill a gen. ed. requirement but it conflicted with a majors class so, unfortunately, I never actually got to take his class. The funny thing was, he remembered me from just that day when he handed out the syllabus and would still talk to me and ask me how I was doing. I have bever met a finer model of the human spirit. He was a fine man. Smiddy will never sound the same. Now all we can do is wait 'till we all get to heaven and can watch Spongebob with him. Until then...

Joe was our prophet. In the Old Testament the prophet not only foretold but forth told. The prophet made sense of what was happening in the world. Joe was the one we tuned to to ask, "What does this mean?" about world events. It was as if Joe could take the pulse of the world like no one else in our midst.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I remember Dr. Scolnick since my first year at UVa-Wise...his booming voice, his interested tone of voice, and his heart of a child. Dr. Scolnick had the gift of being able to teach students without them even knowing they were learning. He did not employ a systematic lecture that conveniently followed every point of the text. Instead, he taught us how to use what we already knew and to logically apply it. He taught us how to be able to talk about a wide variety of topics without any expert knowledge in those areas. Not only was Dr. Scolnick heavily involved in the academics of the college, but he was always well-informed of the extracurricular aspects of the college....I will never forget him calling out the attendance sheet and getting to my name and saying, "the second baseman...no..the pitcher?" Dr. Scolnick was the best and it just won't be the same without him.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I never had the pleasure of having Joe as a teacher, but I did have the pleasure and honor of knowing him as a colleague. The most fitting descriptor I can think of for Joe would be that he was a "gentleman scholar." He loved teaching, learning, and debating. Joe's legacy as a teacher was made evident to me the other day by a student of mine who was saddened to hear of his passing. She said that she had been so excited about the prospect of having Joe's class next semester, that students had spoken so highly of him. Joe will be missed. The campus, and the Faculty Senate, are quiet places without him.
