How did you know him?

I had Dr. Scolnick during my last year at UVA-Wise(2001).

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
When I think of Dr. Scolnick I remember what an inspiration he was to me. One of his most memorable sayings was "Outlast the bastards!" A very simple statement that spoke volumes to me.

He said that he had finished dead last in many things he had accomplished in his life. Too many people are caught up in the glory of first place, and they feel being last is inadequate. Dr Scolnick's point was to keep moving forward and not give up. No matter what the odds or how difficult the task. The goal is to finish and there is glory even in last place. "Outlast the Bastards!" That one little saying has gotten me through some of the most difficult times in my life. Thank you so much for that Dr. Scolnick. You will be greatly missed.

Professor and friend

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
When one thinks of the hitory of UVa-Wise; the foundation and roots of the college, one can not help but to think of Scolnick. He is up there with the 3 Wise men, Papa Joe, and all of the other founding fathers and mothers of UVa-Wise. He would always lend a helping hand, a listening ear, and advice. You could always tell he was coming down the hall by his baritone voice and humming. When I first heard him humming through the halls I couldn't help but laugh, but after a semester or so the sound grew to be very comforting. Professor Scolnick will be missed dearly. The college and surrounding community was very blessed to have him!

How did you know him?

He was my professor and advisor during college.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I first meet Dr. Joseph Scolnick, Jr. when I visited UVA-Wise (then CVC) while in high school to tour the campus. He was kind enough to have lunch with me and talk to me about my plans for college and law school. Little did I know how many talks and lectures I would have with him in the years that followed that conversation. He became my advisor and as a political science major I took a class under the man that many on campus referred to as “Uncle Joe” every semester I attended the college except my last when he agreed to oversee an independent study project for me.

I still remember many of the stories he digressed during into his lectures as well lessons he taught during those lectures. As a Republican, I remember that his views on current events and issues often differed from mine, yet he always encouraged conversation and debate on any topic. My freshman year, a fellow Republican talked me into crashing a Young Democrats event held to recruit new membership. Although I had only been a student at the college few weeks at that time, Dr. Scolnick was already aware that I was a Republican as he certainly was for the sophomore that attended the event with me. While I suspect many other people would have preferred that we leave the event, his reaction was to smile and laugh and immediately engage is in a debate of current events. I remember the three of us sitting on the edge of a picnic table talking long after everyone else left and the event had ended. I remember conversations with him outside of class on many other occasions as well and I thoroughly enjoyed them all. I also recall his reaction to receiving gifts of stuffed elephants purporting to be from “Ron and Nancy” and remember how he displayed them each on the shelves in his office along with his collection of donkeys.

I recall a very brief moment of silence during a lecture when a one Republican student (disrespectfully) accused him of being a “closet Republican”. I also remember the look on his face at that brief moment as we all sat nervously awaiting his reaction to the comment. I consider it a testament to the man (and a blessing for the student that made the comment) that he simply narrowed his eyes and let out a sigh as he nodded his head from side to side and then quickly resumed his lecture. Dr. Scolnick never questioned our right to believe what we chose, and always argued with the arsenal of facts he stored away for every opportunity for debate. Since college I have always noted in his published articles that same virtuous dedication to facts and fairness rather than misuse the power of pen and pulpit to sway opinion to his own view. While he continued to state his opinions, he always recited the facts so his audience could decide how themselves how to interpret whatever topic he was addressing. I will always admire him for that characteristic as well as many others.

As a student entering college in the mid-1980’s I remember upperclassmen sharing the nicknames given to the faculty of the campus. The students had two uncles (he and “Uncle Buck” Henson) and of course, the college patriarch, “Papa Joe” Smiddy. Looking back I realize those nicknames where given because of their never-ending dedication to the college and their students. Joe Scolnick could have taught anywhere, but he chose to remain UVA-Wise to share not only his wisdom, generosity and integrity with his students but to encourage and challenge us all to achieve our goals. The college and his students have all greatly benefited from his decision to do so; I am honored and humbled to have been given the opportunity to know him. Dr. Scolnick – Thank you and God bless you and your family.

Joe, you rest in peace until we meet again. I thank you for being my true friend and coming to my defense many times with your eloquent disputations when my Korean english was lacking for the occasion. I miss you, Joe!!!

He was a colleague and friend for over 30 years.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Joe had a remarkable way with students, whether they were freshmen taking political science just to satisfy a general education requirement or majors within his department. It was always obvious that he genuinely cared for his students and found joy in teaching. In all my years of advising, I recall not once hearing a student complain of not finding his classes interesting or of being treated unfairly or without respect. What an example he set for all of us!

He will be missed by the entire College community, but especially by the students whose lives he has so deeply touched.

He was my favorite professor.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Even though I wasn't a political science major, Dr. Scolnick was my favorite professor on campus. I loved coming to his class and hearing his stories, his digressions, his voice, and laugh. It seemed no matter what that he made the class interesting and fun. I was shocked at his sudden death because I had seen him for my 9:30 class on Tuesday and he seemed fine, happy in fact. He was going on about a new murder mystery book he had gotten and was excited about. I don't mean to digress. All I want to say is I will truly miss the man that brought some much joy to this campus.

Many wonderful classes under him.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Scolnick was a wonderful person. No matter the problem Scolnick was always there. He touched the lives of many, mine included. I will never forget the first time I heard his voice, it was my first year at UVA-Wise. I was sitting in Smiddy Hall talking to some friends when I heard that loud booming voice. I was like who in the world could be that loud. The greatest stories that I heard in college were from Dr. Scolnick. Everything from meatballs the size of his head, to navigating his ship into a desert. For those who had class with myself we can always remember his little laugh when we would hold up the break sign, and he made us promise to return to our back row seats.

We have truely lost a great teacher with his passing but more importantly we have lost a GREAT FRIEND.

I was a student of his at UVa-Wise from 1998 through 2002.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I am sorry to hear about the loss of Professor Scolnick. He was one of the professors you could count on to have an electric classroom. He was always a favorite of mine, and many of my classmates. He did an exceptional job of bringing humor into the room, and I will always remember the exuberance with which he told his 'meatball' story. You never knew what tangent he would get lost in during his lectures; the topics ranged from pot holes to professional wrestling. I know his loss will bring forth many wonderful memories, and may God bless Joe and his family.

Respectfully,

He is my teacher, my friend, and my inspiration

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Dr. Scolnick will always be a part of my life. I came back a few months ago after taking a year off from college to experience life in Western NY and lived near the American side of Niagara Falls. I stopped by campus one day to talk to the campus nurse and upon getting ready to go back to my car I looked over at Smiddy Hall. I knew better than to stop by his office, I really did. However, I just had to say howdy to Professor Scolnick since we'd barely had time to talk since my 10 month journey away from home.

He was sitting at his computer (as always unless he was grading our essays) and his face was cheerful and he said "come on in". I walked in and without being able to stop myself I gave him a hug and I told him that I missed his classes and hearing his voice. Well what was suppose to be a short visit ended up being about a half hour listening tour. For as well all know Scolnick loved to talk and talk about off topic things such as Spongebob Squarepants! I told him I'd stop by to see him again soon upon getting ready to leave. His last words to me was "okay, I'll still be here". And he is still here, he's everywhere I look and the halls of Smiddy will never be the same again, the silence leave an echoing pain that will never cease to be.

Tonight at the memorial service I recollected some of the off topic things that Scolnick talked about. True I was one of those students who would always come to class with an off-topic question about something current just to get him going. This one time it just so happened I found a topic that caused him to go off-topic for the entire class. The next day I remember him saying "Does anyone have any questions, except you" pointing at me "because your questions tend to keep me off topic" Well if you play your cards right then you can outsmart even the greatest of professors. I'll never forget him talking about his first days at UVA with his set of twill suit pants and jacket. Oh how it would have been to see him wearing twill sitting outside in class one day when as they said, and I"m a witness. He said very abruptly and not so silent to the watering system outside the student center, "Damn Water Sprinkler". All he did was scoot his chair aside and continued teaching much to some dismay.

However as I left the gymnasium I couldn't help but to stop in front of the photograph of a professor who meant the world to me, and who made a difference in who I am today, and salute him. saying "See you later". For it is not goodbye, it's just see you later.

And as the most famous of his acroynms still echo through the walls of Smiddy. "Outlive Those Bastards". But the one thing that I'll remember most about Scolnick was him entering class everyday very cheerful (even when he was sick) with a Hel-lo everybody followed by a few hums before he started counting the roll.

He has finally answered his call when our Father asked him to come home. As such one of Joe's wishes was fulfilled. He never had to retire. So now he can argue with God who created everything and maybe one day we can hear a thundering echo saying "NO TELEVISON? BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO SPONGEBOB"

Not missing a beat Dr. Scolnick stopped in mid sentence came down from the stage and used my jacket to tuck her in for her nap. He was an incredible man who left his mark on more people than I can imagine. He will be truly missed.

Memorial, Tribute,

Joe has visited my store almost every Wednesday for the past 12 1/2 years. His love of comics, wrestling, and the Yankees stand out foremost in my mind. We had many conversations about these subjects as well as real world issues. He would always come in and ask "are the new books up yet?" and if it was a small supply for that week he would say "we want lots and lots of comics!" Today as I write this, its 4:00 PM, the time he would usually come in on Wednesday. He will be truly missed.

I remember meeting Joe Scolnick during my second semester here (Spring ’97). I didn’t exactly meet him; I taught a class next to Joe in the Smiddy Hall auditorium. By the end of the semester my class and I had learned more about political science than about English linguistics! But more than a booming baritone, I remember Joe as a fair-minded colleague—one you could have a heated argument with one minute and share a joke with the next. Farewell, Joe. We’ll miss you.

To Joe's family, my deepest sympathy and prayers.

I will miss Joe's presence, voice, and passion for this college. Joe is an unforgettable influence on UVA-Wise. He spoke with clarity, with reason, and with conviction. The best thing about discussing (and even arguing about) an issue with Joe was that he listened to the other point of view and remained your friend after the discussion/argument was over, regardless the outcome. He was respectful and tolerant, yet required intellectual honesty from everyone with whom he came in contact. He simply made this place a better place in which to teach and learn.

I miss him already.

Dr. Scholnick was a great man of character, who will be greatly missed by the college and community. He was a man of great principle and ethics, who always had a word of cheer for others, full of inspiration towards his students. Many times he gave a word of inspiration near the end of a tiring semester's work that seemed to motivate us until the workload was done. He always managed a smile each day, although I am now sure that he didn't always feel like smiling - and that seemed like enough inspiration to guide his students through exams. As an older college student, it seemed that we could communicate in an easy fashion-always feeling that honesty with one another was without question. I am sure he knew how inspiring he was to students who returned to college later in life to earn a degree. In 2002, he gave me a hug at graduation, as if to say "You made it son, I was sure you would." I will never forget the compassion he showed to others, as he was a great example of how one should live life -- live, love and laugh when at all possible. To his family and friends he touched forever, our prayers are with you in this great time of loss. God Bless & Keep You, Ricky B. Barton & Family

I am 54 years old which means I was closer to Joe's age than most of his students and he is one of the few people I have met that could out-talk me. He and I shared a love of political conversation but more than that I found him to be an immensely talented teacher and mentor. As I told a young freshman sitting next to me one day, "listen to his stories, that's when he is really teaching." To call Joe Scolnick a teacher would be a gross understatement. To call him a good, kind, and brilliant character could never go to the totality of the man. His classes will always remain some of my most treasured experiences as a student. Joe, you are finally on the bridge of the Admiral's flag ship forever. I will miss you and regret that I can't be at your memorial service. Godspeed.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Back in the old days (1970's), Dr. Scolnick was a great CVC booster. He went to all of the basketball games and always had a great disposition. As with many of the professors, this 'transplant' to Wise embraced the College and the people.

I was a former student of his and he was my advisor.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
Dr. Scolnick was a big influence on me in my decision to continue aiming towards a teaching profession. Seeing how he interacted with all of his students and how much he touched the lives of every person that crossed his path made him the true heart and soul of UVA-Wise in my opinion. I had Dr. Scolnick for 10 classes, everytime he offered a class I had to take it. I will never foreget his jokes, his love for Sponge Bob, Wrestling, his OTB lectures, and his love for comics. I will miss Dr. Scolnick very much, he was a blessing to me and to the entire college community. His voice could be heard all the way across campus and he loved to talk. I would go up to get him to sign my schedule and I would always be there forever listening to him talk and I enjoyed it because no matter what he talked about, you always left Dr. Scolnick's presence a little more knowledgeable. He left me with a lot of great memories that I will chrerish for the rest of my life.
Thank you Dr. Scolnick for everything.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
I never had the pleasure of taking a course with Professor Scolnick, but I can say that I had the pleasure of witnessing his joy for life. He was such a happy individual, I cannot think of one instance in which I encountered him when he did not have a smile on his face. He seemed to be such a happy man who loved to live the life that he had been given and who loved to share it with others. Many people have come to the College and gone; I believe that Joe Scolnick is one individual whose presence and influence at UVa-Wise will always be fondly remembered.

Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation:
As I type this I can hear Scolnick's voice as clear as day. I first encountered Professor Scolnick when I had MDO'Q's stat class in the room next to his in Smitty Hall. Many a morning Scolnick's booming voice overpowered whatever formula we were learning that day. Joe was also a regular at Cavalier Comics, the lone comic book shop in Wise where he was just as likely to be discussing pro wrestling and comics as he was affairs abroad. Every time I come home to visit, it seems a little more of the CVC/UVAW I grew up with is gone, and with Professor Scolnick's passing, an even larger portion of my young adulthood passes from reality into memory.
God rest you Joe, you've earned the rest.

Memorial, Tribute,

Dr. Scolnick was an excellent teacher and friend to all. He was an inspiring motivator and cheerleader as a faculty advisor to the Government and Law Society and the Mock Trial Team. May God's grace be sufficient for his family and friends.
