How did you know him?

From hearing the booming voice and discussions in the hall and later wherever I encountered him.
|
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation: |

I was never lucky enough to have a class under Joe, but I felt as if I had several times. Many a day I would be in another class, often Professor Sheldon's, and we would hear a portion of Joe's discussion or rant on a particular subject. Professor Sheldon would often stop, listen a moment and comment that Professor Scolnick was fired up today. His booming voice was always an item of comfort to hear when you walked into a building where he was. I had a few discussions with him while I was a student, and even though I had never had a class under him, he seemed to know me and would always speak if he saw me, asking me how I was doing, if I was managing to keep those infernal computers working. Over the last few years, I would encounter him now and again at Cavalier Comics, where I would find myself just sitting and listening as he discussed anything and everything from world politics, to comic books and adaptations, to what happened the current week on wrestling. He was such an extremely informed man, that even if you thought you knew everything about a subject or appreciated it completely, he could reveal something to you that you hadn't thought of , or make you appreciate it just a small bit more. He was the proverbial fan of living life and on his terms. He didn't try to be anything but what he was, and that is what made nearly everyone like him, his diversity of interests allowed him to be able to relate to everyone. I am just glad that I did get to know him, even if only on a small level compared to some and regret that the future students at UVA-Wise will not be blessed with one of the most fascinating and enriching memories of the institution. |

Joe will remain in my heart as an example of what is best about the academy. He was dedicated and passionate about helping his students learn. Excellence was more than just a word, he know what it was and aspired to it, daily. He was a scholar and respected for his intelligence, compassion, and integrity. I will miss his humor and the joy he found in every day. Most of all, I will miss his friendship. |

I had Mr. Scolnick for five different classes in 2002-2003, and he was my advisor during my senior year.
|
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation: |
 |
Mr. Scolnick's classes were something to look forward to. His love of teaching, and substantial knowledge of the material, were obvious, but intertwined within the lessons were his trademark humor and life experiences, allowing everyone to get to know him along with the material. During advising sessions he always took the time to offer praise and inquire as to future plans, never just settling with signing one paper or another. I gained a great deal by having Mr. Scolnick as a professor, as did the college as a whole. |

As a student and employee at Clinch Valley College
|
Memorial, Tribute,
or Consolation: |
 |
I first met Joe as a professor when I was a student at then Clinch Valley College during the middle and late 70's. His was the first voice I heard when I walked into the admin. building. Over the next few years I talked with him briefly on occasion and always found him to be upbeat and most interesting. As a Theatre major, I always saw Joe at our performances. On one occasion he walked out of a show, Sticks and Bones, his comment "I came to be entertained, not to have a message beaten into my head." I respected him for that and we actually talked about it the next day in the Jefferson Lounge. After I left the college in 1989, Joe was one of the few people from the college who would stop and talk with me when we ran into each other at the post office or the grocery. I am sure he will be missed, not only for his ability as a teacher and school man of the world, but for his wonderful presence. |

When the space shuttle challenger exploded on January 26 1988, Dr. Scolnick wrote a fantastic tribute to the astronauts. He had amazing insight into this historical tragedy. I later asked him for a copy, as I was so moved by his words. I still have this today. He will surely be missed, not by us that knew him, but by those that did not. |

Dr. Scolnick's gift was his ability to encourage/demand contemplative thought from his students. He wouldn't let a weak argument stand. But he had an entertaining and informative way of telling you how weak your argument was. He was truly a gifted man. My experience at UVA-Wise was richer because of great instructors like Dr. Scolnick. |

What a shock to visit the website to discover that Dr Scolnick passed away. He was my favorite professor at CVC. I took every course he taught in my three years at CVC-UVA. So many memories come to mind with Joe. While it was so easy to get him off the lecture topic and on to a tangent, it was never a waste of class time because the tangents were just as educational. His advise to always write a lot on the essay exams, because he graded them by "dropping them top of the Smiddy Hall stairwell." Those that "fell fastest got A's" and those that fluttered down got D's. I remember how incredulous he was about about these loss of the Communist Systems course, following the end of the Cold War. "Math never losses a course." And of course, we will never forget that wonderful booming voice. I am so glad that I had a chance to see him when I visited Wise for CVC/UVA-Wise's 50th Anniverary last year. God Bless you, Joe Scolnick.

Dr. Scolnick's gait through the halls and his booming voice that spoke to his enthusiasm and love of teaching were the things that struck me when I first traveled the halls of the college myself. He always spoke to me and I was impressed that with his busyness he noticed each person he encountered, and he acknowledged each of them. I am two years younger now than Dr. Scolnick, and felt a kinship with him as to the interest and enthusiasm of teaching and the field of education. He will be sorely missed, and since I haven't attended classes in two years, I am sorry that I didn't get to enjoy his presence during that time. He surely inspired countless young people, and this writer, though becoming aged, was certainly encouraged and inspired by his presence. |

I entered college late at 28 and as the mother of 5 children with long distances to travel, college was a difficult, if not impossible endeavor. I love politics and Joe's classes were always great. I enjoyed disagreeing with him just a little to get a lecture, he always responded and I learned so much from him. I took all the classes he taught when I was at UVA-Wise. We spent many days discussing politics and life in general over lunch. He cheered me on and cheered me up in more ways than I can count. Becuase of his faith in me at first, I began to really believe I could do this. I have worked now at a major law firm in Washington DC for 15 years. A lot of it is due to Joe's patience and perseverance in helping me to educate myself. When I was in school, he had these great stories for every imaginable concept, to remember them, a bunch of us kids got together and created a Scolnickian Dictionary, complete with off the wall terms for major concepts we needed to learn. At first Joe was a little perturbed, but after we gave him a copy, he told us he took it home and showed it to his family. I looked forward to discussing the next topic everyday with Joe. He taught me many things which have enhanced my life. He was much loved and imminently respected. This world has suffered a great loss with his passing!! He will be forever remembered in my heart and I pray his family is comforted with the knowledge that his life contributed positively to many others. He made a difference and that is the final greatest statement I can attribute to such a wonderful person!! |

When I was chosen as an exchange student by Istanbul University to UVA's College at Wise in 2000, I had no idea that I would meet with such wonderful people. Dr.Scolnick was one of them. As my major was International Relations in Turkey, I had almost all of my courses from Dr. Scolnick. I believe I had chance to know him very well. He was a great speaker. He knew how to take our attention to the relevant subjects. He had this powerfull voice which you could hear from two blocks away. Although he was an intellectual and could comment on almost everything, he was also very modest that he could write "you clearly know more than me about this subject" on my Turkish Foreign Policy essay. I was shocked with the sad news. A few days later I was informed that the Vice Chancellor of College Relations, Dr.N.Brent Kennedy was in coma. Dr.Scolnick passed away without giving me a chance to pray for him to overcome the heart attack and survive, now I have the chance to pray for Brent. I ask everyone who even didn't have chance to know Brent, to pray for him. |

My earliest recollections of Joe date from the early 1970's when a small Pro-Musica group in the music offices, upstairs in the gymnasium. Joe knew the most about music and had a huge collection of LPs. He introduced us to the works of such obscure composers as Johann Nepomuk Hummel. (When we heard it we understood why he was obscure). Joe's musical ability was enigmatic. He knew and deeply and criticallly appreciated music at a level well beyond even most musicians, but he had great difficulty making music. He had a fine piano and worked meticulously learning pieces bar by bar, much as one would program a computer, with virtually no ability to read beyond what he had programmed. In our small Unitarian Universalist fellowship meetings, the only hymn he could sing in tune was the setting of Schiller's "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. With this piece his great bass was almost in control. He often recounted how a grade school teacher had once asked him not to sing with the class. It is easy to imagine Joe as a third grader, well off pitch, drowning out the rest of the class. Perhaps that incident curtailed his musical development. On the 2001 spring break trip Amelia Harris led to Prague and Munich, Joe and I shared rooms. I expected that he would visit museums and seek out live music, but instead, he spent his time sightseeing and shopping with Robin and Trevor Boggs. He especially delighted in finding Winnie-the Pooh artifacts, an interest he shared with Robin. He continued to bring Robin Winnie-the-Pooh pencils, etc. long after the trip. Several students mentioned that Joe was really just a big kid. A few examples verify this analysis to me. For one, the highlight of the European trip for Joe was having his pockets picked on the subway in Prague. Although he was cleaned of credit cards and cash, he clearly enjoyed the excitement and attention generated as he and our guide scrambled to cancel credit cards and traveler's checks. It was not that he was a difficult target; he was quite conspicuous wearing his white Virginia Cavaliers baseball cap. Another of his delights was his Christmas tree story told each year, with variations, to our UU group. This was his description of himself and his father's picking out the tree, he wanting a big, beautiful one, his father a cheap one, then the decorating with his sister Harriet. In the years after his heart problems, Joe seemed to mellow, and to genuinely appreciate his surviving that ordeal. In Europe, he was content just to be there, without making a big effort to see and do everything possible. I believe he felt that life was too precious to be taken too seriously, but should be honored and relished every day. Joe's life was an Ode to Joy. |

I'll never forget Dr. Scolnick's unique style. He certainly made class interesting. His famous digressions were interesting and even though he thought they were often off topic, they surprisingly seemed to me to be right on track. He certainly possessed a wealth of knowledge and showed concern for students. I remember an interesting discussion I had with him earlier in the semester about computers after his office computer crashed and he lost everything. He didn't trust anything electronic and talked about the old typewriters. UVA-Wise sure has lost an icon and things will never be the same. I'll forever remember his unique voice and what he lectured on in our POLS 381 class on that last Tuesday. |

Great guy and a fantastic teacher. Went the "extra mile" to ensure students understood the learning material. If a student did not do well in his class, it wasn't because of Joe Scolnick didn't offer them every opportunity to excel. His thoughtfulness and caring for his students should be the standard for all teachers to emmulate now and in the future. He will be missed........ |

I only knew him by the reach of his voice down an empty hallway, but the love others had for him is immeasurable. Many times, as a student and resident advisor, I heard the words, "I love Scolnick" as others exchanged thoughts about their days. I never had the opportunity to have class with him, but even those of us huddled away in the English department knew the sound of his voice and the sincerity of his rappor with students. Such a legacy will surely not go uncrecognized throughout the life of the college. May God bring peace to all who knew him.

I never had the privelage of being in one of Dr. Scolnick's classes, but I have heard him speak on a number of occassions. He truly left a lasting impression on me during my time in college. He shared a lot of his experiences and expertise with the student body during the days that followed the 9/11 attacks. Those are days that I will never forget. He was a true intellectual. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and the many people he influenced over the years. The energy and spirit he provided the college will be deeply missed. |

Dr. Scolnick was one of the most positive people I've ever met. He used to tell me to relax and go look at the clouds. I wasn't supposed to allow any thoughts to stay in my head during that time. He was a great professeur and role model for the students at UVA @ Wise, and I know he will be missed. |

Dr. Scolnick's stories of his service to his country, such as those of his having been a participant in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban missle crisis, were fascinating and inspiring. It was an honor to have been in his class. |

Dr. Scolnick was just as intriguing in the classroom as he was outside of it. He was always more than willing to say hello or give a kind gesture to everyone. I remember having two conversations with him outside of class. The first related to New Jersey, and the latter regarded the Hampton Roads area. We were both familiar with each of these areas. The conversations were both short, but I can still remember them as if they occurred last week when in reality it was almost four years ago. Professor Scolnick meant a great deal to many and he will always be remembered by the university, faculty, students, and alumni. |

I had, like many, several profs during my time at UVA wise. But Dr. Scolnick is one that gives me the most vivid memories. He had the most distinctive laugh and sense of humor. He also was a very gentle man that was filled with compassion. If you ever had a problem, in life or in any class he was always available to talk to. You could stop him anywhere, in the halls, in the cafe, before or after class, or even if you saw him in town. He was never to busy for his students. He was a great man and he will be deeply missed! God Bless You Dr. Scolnick! |

"Know your Constituency"! Those of us in 381 heard those words at least four times each class period twice a week. I miss hearing that phrase. I first met Professor Scolnick through Ms. Steele. I required two more Political Science classes to complete my concentration in History. I was in awe of Professor Scolnick the first time I met him. My first one hour conversation with him was related to the President, military, and his experience in the Navy. When talking about his experience in the Navy, he spoke with passion and excitement. I will greatly miss his classes. His roll call was one of the greatest experiences. He called everyone's name with a different tone. Some names where followed with funny comments. One lady he called the "tennis player", another he always mispronounced his name. It usually took about 10 minutes to call role. :0) He liked to pick on Idaho. "Mountains, buffaloes, and potatoes." I loved to hear him change his voice to speak like cartoon characters. My favorite was when he spoke like the Big Rooster and the Chicken. That was hilarious. He did a great job. His voice would become high pitched when he spoke of something funny. When the class started laughing, he kept making us laugh. Just from this one episode, his love for his students was revealed. Everyday in the life of Professor Scolnick was an episode. If his life was a TV program such as "Seinfield" or "ER", what would the title be? This would be something to reflect on.
